Why is Sexual Energy central to (neo) Tantra?

Introduction

In this episode, Jason and Ingo explore why sexual energy is such a central part of neo-tantric practice.

They look at the difference between classical tantra and neo-tantra, how sexual energy became such an important part of modern tantric work, and why this matters especially for men who love men.

The conversation explores shame, conditioning, trauma, bliss, embodiment, and the possibility of using sexual energy as a doorway into healing, freedom, and deeper awakening.

They also share a beginner book recommendation and talk about the Tantra Love Festival in Glastonbury.

Hello and welcome to the Tantra for Gay Men podcast, hosted by Jason and Ingo Tantra. Here we explore spirituality and personal growth through the practice of tantra, the body, energy and sex.

Hello there, I’m Jason Tantra, and welcome to episode three of the Tantra for Gay Men podcast with beautiful Ingo Tantra and beautiful me, Jason Tantra.

In this podcast, we are going to be talking about why sexual energy is such a key component of the practice of neo-tantra.

We’re going to explore what neo-tantra is, and talk about different perspectives around that topic.

Also, stay to the end because we have a special gift for you: our first book recommendation. We’ll also talk about the beloved Tantra Love Festival, which is happening in Glastonbury in the UK in August.

So yes, we really hope you enjoy this podcast.

Here we are, my beloved — episode three. We’ve made it through the first two episodes. How are you doing?

I’m doing fine. I’m really excited about today’s topic.

I just love your smile and your beautiful eyes, and I’m just loving you in this moment — even though we may have wanted to murder each other five minutes ago.

That is life. It’s a game of two halves. Both sides of the coin.

So today’s question is: why is sexual energy such a core part of neo-tantric practice?

To understand that, we need to begin with the word neo-tantra.

There is classical or traditional tantra, which originated in what is now northern India and developed across that region many centuries ago. Very simply, its core idea is that each of us can realise our true nature — our full potential, awakening, union with the cosmos — in this very life.

Classical tantra often works with meditation, the body, the energy body, energetic centres, and the channels through which energy moves. It is not only about the mind. It engages the body as a doorway into deeper states of awareness.

But in classical tantra, sex is not necessarily centre stage.

In neo-tantra, sexual energy becomes much more central. This is something that developed more strongly in the twentieth century, influenced by psychology, body-based therapy, the New Age movement, and teachers such as Osho.

Neo-tantra brings together meditation, body awareness, emotional healing, sexual liberation, and spiritual practice.

For us, that is important because sexual energy is one of the most powerful forces in the body — but it is also one of the most conditioned.

We are shaped by society, family, religion, culture, shame, trauma, and personal history. Very few people are completely free in their sexual expression.

As men who love men, many of us carry particular layers around this. Some of us grew up with shame around being gay. Some lived through the HIV crisis. Some carry religious trauma. Some carry personal or sexual trauma. Some simply grew up in cultures where our desire was not welcomed or celebrated.

So when we bring sexual energy into spiritual practice, we are not just chasing pleasure. We are also meeting everything that gets in the way of pleasure.

That is one of the reasons sexual energy is so central to neo-tantra: it can open bliss, ecstasy, freedom and connection — but it also shows us our conditioning.

For Jason, discovering tantra was revolutionary because spirituality and sexuality had previously felt completely separate. In his twenties, sex often felt confusing and painful, while spirituality lived somewhere else entirely. Tantra brought those worlds together.

It offered a way for sexuality to become sacred. A way for sexual energy to become part of a spiritual path.

When we are fully surrendered into sexual energy, there can be bliss, divinity and a remembering of who we really are beyond conditioning. But bliss is not the final destination. It is a doorway, a station on the path, a side effect, and a glimpse of something deeper.

Sexual energy can be worked with in many ways. It can be raised through the body, cultivated, circulated, and used to open deeper states of awareness. This is a vast topic, and we only begin to scratch the surface in this episode.

We also offer a book recommendation for beginners: The Multi-Orgasmic Man by Mantak Chia and Douglas Abrams.

This book is practical rather than deeply spiritual, but it offers useful foundational techniques for working with arousal, orgasmic energy, and sustaining sexual energy in the body.

For men beginning a tantric journey, this can be a useful starting point.

We finish by talking about the Tantra Love Festival in Glastonbury: a five-day festival with workshops, rituals, connection, celebration and community.

The festival brings together around 130 men and includes a wide range of experiences, from gentle connection workshops to deeper tantric massage, erotic practice, sacred ritual, dance, music and celebration.

One of the things we love most is how quickly people begin to feel connected. Within a day or two, many people feel like they are among old friends — able to share, be seen, and enter into deeper tantric practice.

So that is episode three. We hope it has opened something around why sexual energy is such a key part of neo-tantric practice.

In the next episode, we will be exploring a common issue: “I can’t make sound during sex.” We’ll look at what gets in the way, why sound matters, and some helpful ways to begin opening that part of yourself.

Take care. Lots of love. Bye bye.
